Obituary for Alberto Gentile

With sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Alberto Gentile on May 6th, 2022 at the age of 92.  Loving husband to Vera for over 60 years.  Adoring father to Peter (Rose) and Frank.  Cherished nonno of Quinn, G and Sebastian.  He will be missed by his extended family and many friends.  Alberto belonged to a large family that he treasured, he was predeceased by his sisters Matilda, Modesta (Raffaello), Assunta (Rinaldo) and brother Raniero (Ida).  He is survived by brothers Georgio (Teresa), Rinaldo (Anna Maria), Fernando (Sofia) and sister Rosalba (Renato) and dozens of nephews and nieces.

Alberto was born in 1929, soon after his mother passed away.   As a teenager he moved to Bern, Switzerland to work and help provide for his family that lived in Castellalto in the Abruzzo region that had been ravaged by WW2.  He set sail for Canada in 1951 on the ship ironically named ‘Homeland’ to start a new life and create his own family.   The quest began as a lumberjack in Hearst, Ontario.  He would relocate to Toronto where his tireless work ethic, warm smile and business acumen created the quintessential immigrant success story.  He was always grateful to Canada for giving him that opportunity.  His legacy will always be the family he created, and, the many he sponsored, helped and inspired as they started their own journey in their new country.  He will be sorely missed but his example and memories will live on in all those that he touched.

Visitation will be held at Bernardo Funeral Home (2960 Dufferin St., south of Lawrence Avenue) on Thursday May 12th from 2-4 pm and 6-9 pm.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Fidelis Church (33 Connie Street, Toronto). Those not able to attend the Funeral Mass in person, are welcome to join us via livestream by clicking here . Entombment to follow at Beechwood Cemetery (7241 Jane Street, Concord).
