Obituary for Antonio Vetro
VETRO, Antonio (Tony) Joseph
It is with profound sadness that the family of Tony Vetro announces his peaceful passing of our beloved Father, Nonno, Stepfather, Nephew, Uncle, Cousin, and special friend to many on Wednesday October 7th at the age of 78 years. He will be deeply missed by all his loving family and friends.
Tony was born on September 15th, 1942 in Vallelonga, Calabria, Italy. Early in life Tony lost his dear mother, Anna and loving sister, Antonia. He then immigrated to Canada with his loving Father Domenico, Stepmother Angela, and sisters Guiseppina (Pina) and Victoria (Vicky).
Tony our loving father is survived by his family Domenic, Mary Jo, Nonno of Katelyn, Tony Jr., Laura, and Stepfather to Corey Lewis. He always had and a special place in his heart for his dear and predeceased spouse Darlene. May they both rest in peace together after numerous years battling various illnesses.
He was a dear and loving brother to Vicky and Domenic, Pina and Joe, Mary and Rudy, Teresa and Fidel, Nancy, Anna, Dominic, Sam and Nick. Tony had a lot of great memories and lasting friendships with his Aunts, Uncles and Cousins who took him in at an early age and help raise him along with Pina and Vicky. His close family helped up until his last few months with making him special dinners as he struggled through his latest illness.
Over the years he gained close and lasting friendships to many of various walks of life. In his early years he grew close to many peers from Saint Francis of Assisi and continued to cherish these friendships for years to come. He enjoyed the sport of hockey and passed that passion to his son Domenic.
Tony was an adventure seeker and in his early 20s he journeyed out to the west coast where he started his machine operator career and enjoyed the exciting and moving atmosphere of California in the 60s. He then returned to Toronto to start a family and enjoyed many fun and enjoyable times with his close and loving family and friends.
At an early age of 27 Tony suffered a severe and life-threatening illness but as strong and proud as he was, he fought through this illness and lived an active and enjoyable life for many years. Through rain, snow and shine Tony continued his career as a machine operator and again enjoyed the time spent with family and friends. In addition, his “can do” attitude was demonstrated by fighting through various illnesses over the years and being creative in his career paths. On a number of occasions Tony also known as TV quoted “I am living on borrowed time” and he made sure he lived life to the fullest and as we all know he took pride in his appearance and was always dressed for success. He always looked great and was proud of it. He passed on his love for gaming to his son Tony Vetro jr. where he continued the Vetro tradition for over 25 years at Caesars.
Tony had several passions over the years. Most memorable would include his passion of fine cars from his old Jaguar, Impala, Vet, Caddy and most recently driving around his neighborhood with the BMW convertible with the top down enjoying his summer rides. In addition, Tony loved to cook and enjoy a great plate of his favorite lasagna and all his traditional Italian cuisine. Life will just not be the same without watching him enjoy Zia Vicky’s award-winning Lasagna especially during our Christmas dinners. He was known around his neighborhood by many as he frequented several Italian Social clubs for a good espresso, a game a cards and fun conversation. We will all remember his great sense of humor.
In his spare time, he would plant a few basil and tomato plants on his balcony but most of the time he would cruise to family and friends and help himself to a good haul of fresh tomatoes. We all welcomed him to our gardens as he loved his fresh vegetables and fun conversation.
Tony was always kind and respectful and most importantly he took a passion for caring for his loving Darlene through all the challenges over the years.
Most recently Tony enjoyed his precious time living with Darlene traveling to Windsor to visit Tony and Laura and journeying down south to visit with Domenic, Mary Jo and Katelyn. We will all miss you Nonno…
We all have so many loving memories…
We are deeply saddened by the passing of our brother Tony. We fondly recall our mother, Angela Rose Vetro, telling us about their voyage across the Atlantic with Vicky, Tony, Pina, Nick and Anna. Many other relatives also shared the same journey in 1951 on the Saturnia vessel.
We are a blended family with 5 kids born in Italy and another 5 born in Toronto, Sam, Domenic, Mary, Nancy and Teresa. Our parents raised all 10 children together and as challenging as it was, we were united. Nancy and Teresa fondly remember Tony taking them to our dad’s City of Toronto employee Christmas party to enjoy some cheer, treats and toys.
We all recall the wedding reception held at our home on Grandravine Drive to join in the celebration of marriage for Tony and Shirley with more than 100 or so guests. The gang including Tony and Shirley would join to help make homemade tomato sauce every year, as it was our family tradition. Nonni Angela would always have a pot of sauce ready for all, especially Tony, Domenic and Anthony as they would drop by the house after school. Domenic and Anthony loved Nonni hard bread and zipoli.
Tony will be sorely missed by family and friends. Eternal rest grant unto Tony, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May Tony rest in peace. Amen.

Visitation for immediate family only will be at Bernardo Funeral Homes, 2960 Dufferin Street, Toronto, Ontario on Sunday October 18th from 2:00pm – 4:00pm followed by coffee and light refreshments.
