Obituary

It is with profound sorrow, we mourn the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and aunt Ida Mauro, on May 24, 2020 at the age of 87. Predeceased by her beloved husband Raffaele (September 23, 2018). Cherished mother of Cathy, Nella (Mike Peltenburg) and Sandra (Luis Sousa). Proud Nonna of Daniel, Aaron, Adam and Mitchell. Forever remembered by her siblings, she will be missed by her many nieces, nephews and their families.

During this unprecedented situation with COVID-19, it is with very heavy hearts that our family has made the difficult decision to hold a limited attendance funeral with our immediate family, in honor of our dear mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, Ida Mauro. As of April 7, 2020, the Bereavement Authority of Ontario (the BAO) has implemented a directive of 10 people MAXIMUM in the entire funeral home at any given time (not including staff). For more information on the directive, please visit: https://thebao.ca/registrars-directive-10-max-or-less-in-the-entire-funeral-home-at-one-time/ . We have chosen to do this to minimize the threat of spreading the coronavirus. Ultimately, we recognize that the health and safety of our family and friends comes first. We appreciate your love and support at this time, and we welcome your messages of condolence.

For those wishing to view the funeral service, we are providing the service virtually via Zoom. Please reach out to Sandra Sousa at sandrasousa@sympatico.ca to get the link and password. Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday May 27, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. Private entombment will follow at Prospect Cemetery. Please note that cemeteries fall under the same rule of 10 maximum. Please do not come to the funeral home to follow in procession.

We would like to thank St. Michael’s Hospital specifically the Nephrology Department and those who were involved with our mother’s excellent care during and after her illness specifically Mario Mandarino.and Graca Maria Nunes. We, the family thank you all and will never forget.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Kidney Foundation in memory of Ida.

A tribute and celebration of her life will be held at a later date, when it is safe to do so.

It was Mrs. Mauro when I first met Nella and it became "Nanna" for us Mangia-cakes when Adam and Mitchell were born. I remember Ida giving me an English-Italian dictionary for my first Christmas with the family so that I could learn Italian to better communicate with her. The very next Christmas, I gave her an English dictionary and we both shared a good laugh. As feisty as Ida was, for more than thirty years she welcomed me into her family and her home and she was the best Nanna that our boys could have. We will all miss you Nanna.

Cathy, Ornella and family, Sandra and family, please accept our heartfelt sympathies for the loss of your mother. She will always be Zia Ida, our mom's sister to us and will be remembered as a free spirited, adventurous woman. She will also be deeply missed and grieved by her younger sister Eva. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time. May she forever rest in peace and tranquility.
Eva, Raffaela and family, Rosetta and family and Frank and family.

I knew Ida for about a year. I lived in her upstairs apartment in 2018-19. There are no simple words to describe this unique feisty lady that had a huge heart, so much passion, and spoken broken English. I spent many a half-day listening to her and nodding yes but only knew half of what she was saying. I could, however, if there was enough time and space tell you that I did discover how she tried to fight City Hall, stories about the girls growing up, when she and Raffaela purchased the house on Fisher, the changes the neighbourhood went through over the years, stories about her in-laws and how they lived upstairs. She fed me, yelled at me and I just grew a soft spot for her in my heart. I called her Eda. Because she was a bit hard of hearing, I always yelled from her from door Eda! Can I come in? Even though my name is Jane, she would walk to the front door and said Janny, come, and motioned to me. Following her to the kitchen, I wasn’t sure what the topic of the day would be but sometimes she just wanted company and I would watch her cook a “little bit of pasta” or soup for her lunch.
I will never know another person like you Eda, and so glad I did. Sending hugs to you in heaven.
