Obituary

January Joie T. Lumagbas,42, of Toronto, Ontario, CA, died Sept. 2, 2020, at her home. She put up a valiant fight against metastatic breast cancer but finally succumbed to her illness two years post diagnosis.

Jan, as she was popularly known, was born Jan. 9,1978, in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines, to Joel and Wendy (Tismo) Lumagbas. Her Dad was an agriculturist and her Mom a nurse.

She attended Corpus Christi School and Liceo de Cagayan University and graduated in 1999, with a degree in physiotherapy. She pursued her dream of living abroad and migrated to Canada in 2001.

Jan loved and adored all her nephews and nieces and was quite active in their care and upbringing. She was also an active host for the Toronto Homestay Program as she always enjoyed having young people from different cultures & countries in the home she shared with her longtime partner Minnie.

Her interests included baking, gardening, traveling, hiking as well as exploring the outdoors. She loved to spend time with family and take part in small gatherings with friends. She was dedicated to her profession as a physiotherapist at Shelton Physiotherapy Associates where she worked until her diagnosis in 2018, She was an extraordinarily caring and a genuine friend to many.

Jan is survived by her parents Joel and Wendy of Makati, Phils; sister Teepee Sabio, brothers Andre' and Glicer, together with their wives Jenny and Christie respectively; nephews Matt, Vincent, Michael, Jackie, Cairo & Aaron; nieces Casey, Alex, Eanna, Pippa, and Auly; beloved Aunts Tatiboots and Tita Gingging; her close-knit circle of friends; a host of friends and family here and abroad; and last but not the least, Minnie, her partner of almost 20 years, who cared for her till her passing.

Jan's life would seem short to many, but those she touched understood that how one lived their life mattered more than the length of years one lived while here on earth. She was a gentle and incredibly caring soul, and a sincere friend.

Dear Jan, you are beautiful and kind soul, you have always been. I have not seen you in many years but at last am glad we reconnected more recently. Unfortunately, the time has slipped through the hands and we did not get to see each other. Although this makes me very sad, I know you are in some place special. See you again some day, my friend

Dadan, the big boys, specially Vincent, were sober when I told them you’ve gone. Pippa and Jackie cried and I had to soothe them , making them realize it would cruel to make you stay here as you physically suffer silently. Although I had prayed and prayed asking for your miraculous healing or for God to show His mercy. ... my heart still shattered. .... again. We came from the same womb, shared the same childhood, shared the same joys even as you shared in each of my kids— your nephews and Pippa’s pregnancy, birth, infancy, and toddlerhood. But even I couldn’t save you from this disease. I had to surrender you to Him who loaned you to us. “ God has you in heaven, but we have you in our 💕.”
