Obituary

God called Joseph (Giuseppe) Cipelli on the morning of May 2, 2021 at the age of 93.

Born November 13, 1927 in Piacenza, Italy.

Joseph is survived by several cousins in Italy to whom he always felt deep affection.

He arrived in Canada in 1955 where he built a successful agrifood commodity business and created a wine trading company. He had a true entrepreneurial spirit, travelled the world, adored Canada’s ski hills, was an avid reader and was an Honorary Donor to St. Michael’s Hospital.

May God Bless you and May you find Comfort in Heaven.

The Funeral will take place in Italy where he will be laid to rest at his family’s chapel alongside his parents and brother, Vittorio.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation. (The Donation link is at the bottom of the page)

On behalf of his predeceased ‘Caro Amico’ (close long-time friend) and one-time business partner, Inerio; the Cinque Family of Toronto, Canada regretfully extends overseas our deepest condolences and warmest sympathies to the Cipelli Family of Piacenza, Italy.
In this time of Covid and for those unaware, a few extra words about an individual who will be remembered in many different ways…
Giuseppe, ‘Joseph’, or simply ‘Joe’, was known to us as an avvocato (lawyer) and mercante (merchant). Joe was an internationally respected commercialista (commercialist) of commodities. Similar to Inerio, he was the consummate conscientious worker and an astute businessman; a Canadian Immigrant success story. Together, over 55 years ago, they turned their shared passion into a joint and separate business venture, still operating to this day.
Throughout his extensive enterprising years, Joe shared several cherished relationships at his company. Of particular mention are one-time office colleagues Memory and Barbara, followed by his righthand, Helena until his passing. At times a guarded and very private individual, Joe in essence was a good friend and a genuine person to many; humble, kind and giving.
Joe carried himself as a Signore (Sir). In youth he was dashing, like his contemporary, Giovanni Anelli. Even though Joe was of Italian noble lineage, privilege and upbringing, he always modestly suggested he was just a collegial ‘farmer’ who held a personally deep attachment and sentiment to his family’s agricultural land. Joe was the paternal descendant of a regional kinship of stature through public and political service as well as the maternal descendant of Maria Luisa dei Conti Douglas Scotti di Vigoleno.
Joe was also a lifelong bachelor, however always regarded as a gentleman when about town in Toronto’s yesteryear. He was a dedicated jogger on our city’s streets and an avid skier; Mont Tremblant his getaway. Since residing in Toronto, Joe chose to work and live in the St. Clair Avenue & Yonge Street neighbourhood corridors and had overcome several health challenges in his later years.
I know and trust the person my father Inerio, affectionately called ‘Conte’ (Count), enjoyed a long life well-lived. One with many good times and wonderful memories shared over a history of years with his Canadian ‘family’ of close friends; both business and personal.
Joe will be dearly missed by those who knew, loved and cared for him.
A special thank you to his trusted associate and caring friend of innumerable years, Helena.
In peaceful memory, on behalf of Inerio,
Mauro ‘Chico’ Cinque
