Obituary for Maria Antonia Gagliardi

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Maria Antonia Gagliardi, at age 88.  She is now reunited in heaven with her beloved husband, Francesco Antonio Gagliardi.   Maria was a loving mother, wife, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, aunt, and nonna.  Maria was peacefully called by God on Tuesday, March 21, while surrounded by her three devoted children: Elizabeth (Nick), Joe (Sharlyne), Marianna, and her three adoring grandchildren: Juliana, Penelope and Charlotte Marie.

Born on July 19, 1934 in Torre di Ruggiero, Calabria, Maria immigrated to Toronto in August 1971 after marrying Francesco.  Maria’s admiration for her husband and love for her three children were her entire existence.  As soon as a family member, friend, or neighbour visited her home, she immediately asked, “Can I make you something to eat?”  Maria’s empathy and care for others had no boundaries; she welcomed everyone in her home and was a surrogate mother to all that cared for her.  Kristina, Raj, and Shirley instantly became daughters rather than caregivers.

Maria was a founding member of the Torresi community in Toronto (Torre di Ruggiero Social & Cultural Association) since its inception in 1987.  She proudly advocated for a replica of her hometown’s saint, Maria SS Delle Grazie in Toronto.  Her faith and devotion to her patriot saint never wavered, and if you had the pleasure of sitting beside Maria in church, it became apparent how much she enjoyed celebrating the Festa della Madonna.

Maria was an incredibly courageous and strong woman who was always ready to provide sound advice to anyone in need of help.  When not cooking, Maria was a passionate gardener who woke up early to tend to her garden until the sun set and grew fresh vegetables that she shared with family and friends.

Always remembered by her sister-in-law Teresa Simonetta, brother-in-law Mario Gagliardi and her first cousin Catherine D’Agostino as well as her many nieces and nephews.

Maria fiercely battled against dementia for the past seven years, but despite the disease, she was always present and recognized all those that visited her.

Riposa in pace cara Mamma. Nonna, we love you and thank you for granting us the time to spend with you.

Special thanks to her Villa Colombo family on the 5th Floor Fusco wing, all the PSW’s, especially her surrogate daughters: Paulette, Sharlotte, Edith, Redilla, Banji, nurses Beverley and Jo-Anne as well as Maria (recreational aide).

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Villa Colombo Toronto Auxiliary.
