Obituary for Maria Malzahn (Di Donato)

Maria succumbed suddenly to the effects of COVID on January 16th at Humber River Hospital; a tragedy that also took the lives of her older brother Domenico and his wife Vincenzina (Gina) within days of one another.

Maria was the loving daughter of Raimondo and Carolina Di Donato (deceased). She is survived by and dearly missed by her younger brother Gerry (Marie).

Maria (“Zizi”) will be greatly missed by her five nieces and nephews; Bruno, Cherubina (Mike), Raimond (Marilyn), Corrin-Marie (Craig), and Michael (Kathryn); “Great Aunt-Zizi” to Tabitha (Victor), Raimond, Ethan, Molly-Marie, Reef and Charlie Rose; “Great Great Aunt-Zizi” to Mia.

Maria was born in Castelpizzuto, a small mountain town in Italy approximately 200 Km east of Rome. In May of 1956 Maria, along with her younger brother Gerry, her sister-in-law Vincenzina and her mother Carolina, immigrated to Canada to join the rest of their family, her dad Raimondo and older brother Domenico, who had left Italy in 1952 to establish their new home in Toronto.

At the age of 18 she attended hairdressing school and was gainfully employed as a hairstylist in Toronto. Her creative and artistic nature and her desire to work hard with and help others paved the way for Maria to become an esthetician. In 1967 Maria opened her own hair design salon and continued to provide service until she retired in 2014.

Maria found true love late in life and in 1988 she married the love of her life, Herbert Malzahn, a personification of a true gentleman, to complement Maria’s sincerity, love and carrying nature, overflowing affection and kindness and her infectious smile. This is what Herbert wrote in a note to Maria that she carried in her wallet until the day she passed; “It’s so beautiful to be with you. You’re sincere, so loving and that certain smile of yours makes me feel so deep for you it’s hard to describe. Such a beautiful love we have together I will always treasure.” Truer words were never spoken. Herbert passed away in 2001.

Maria will be eternally missed but forever in our hearts along with her husband Herbert.
