Obituary for Maria Estrela Rodrigues

RODRIGUES, Maria Estrela

With sadness, we announce the passing of Maria Rodrigues on April 26, 2021 at the age of 98. Predeceased by her husband Jose Pablo. Beloved mother of Olivia, Joaquim, Odette, Idalina, Josė Domingos, and Fatima. Proud avó of António José (Tozé), Paulo, Carlos, João, Claudia, Michelle, Luis, Stephanie, Marco, Nádia, Maria Estrela, Veronica and Rui and bisavó to many more precious great-grandchildren. She’ll be missed by her many family and friends in Portugal and Toronto.

Maria Estrela lived a life committed to family. She struggled through hard times with deep convictions and moral courage. She did not let life’s hurdles bring her down. She had a youthful spirit and a giving heart. With her characteristic verve and panache she taught us how to make the best of difficult situations. Her character was laden with a tough sweetness molded by a life of struggle that she fought to the bitter end. Yet she never lost sight that one must take life by the horns and to always look on the bright side. She was the epitome of warmth and caringness under her rough exterior. She was the true selfless matriarch to our family that stood as the solid rock that gave us the tenacity to confront life. With her passing, she leaves an emptiness in our souls and many tears in our eyes. She had a passionate soul. She was unique and special, both strong and tender, determinant and understanding, practical and hopeful. She was a true beacon of love and from that love flourished a multi-generational wellspring of sons, daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that owe her their essence and heritage. Her long and arduous life is a testament to the human spirit. She graced us with the glory of her spirit, one that now continues in our hearts and memories. May she rest in peace in God’s kingdom. She will be dearly missed by those whose lives she affected.
