Obituary for Mario Rovito

ROVITO, Mario

Passed away peacefully at The Harold and Grace Baker Centre on February 4, 2021 at the age of 87. He is reunited, in heaven, with his loving wife, Virginia and daughter, Franca. Mario is lovingly remembered by his siblings: Natalina (Carmen) and Tony (Rita), his children: Mima (Natale), Franca (Matteo), Pina (Tony), Connie (Frank), Joe (Genny), Frank (Sarah), Antonette (Joe), his grandchildren: Stefano (Raffaella), Laura, Frank (Brenda), Marco (Samantha), Joe (Laura), Michael (Rosie), Adam (Karoleen), Victoria, Dylan, Leah, Ethan, Isaac, Julia and Sofia and his great-grandchildren: Natalino, Giuseppe, Rebecca, Francesco, Antonio and Alessio, and his many nieces and nephews.

Born in Rovito, Cosenza on March 24, 1933, Mario immigrated to Canada in February 1961 to begin a new life. He worked incredibly hard to provide for his family. He spent 45 years working at Abbott of England. He also had a love for cooking; he always boasted that he was a cook in the Army. For many years, Mario had become famous for his taralle, Italian breadsticks, and each time someone would visit him they would walk away with a full bag. Mario was also known for his green thumb. Everything he touched grew in abundance. He turned every patch of soil around his house into a fruitful garden.

Our family would like to express our gratitude to all the nurses and PSWs that cared for him at The Harold and Grace Baker Centre. Mario made many friends at the Baker Centre and he was nicknamed “Super Mario” by all the residents and staff. He enjoyed playing bingo and singing in the Italian Choir. We were also privileged to attend his first Christmas Concert in December 2019 where he sang with the Choir.

The morning of February 4th, Mario woke up saying that he had a party to attend to upstairs. He said, “I shaved my beard and I’m all dressed up!” Enjoy your party up in heaven sitting next to Jesus at his banquet table. We love you forever.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic our family has made the difficult decisions to hold a private visitation. A private funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Wilfrid’s Church on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. and you’re welcome to participate virtually. You can use the link below or go to our "Photo & Video Page" and click "Watch Webcast"

Following the Mass, Mario will be laid to rest with his spouse at Westminster Cemetery. Due to the limited number of people allowed to be in attendance, only the immediate family members will attend the services in the funeral home, church and at the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mario may be made to Harold & Grace Baker Centre.
