Dear Mary, Michelle, Lina, Lily and Family,
We were so sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved Mother, Rosa. She was such a lovely woman with a warm and beautiful heart. When visiting our family in Canada, she and your Father, Alessandro, welcomed us into their home and treated us with a kindness and hospitality that we will always remember. You are in our thoughts and prayers. May you find comfort in your memories, and may Rosa rest in God's perpetual love and light.

With our most profound sympathies,
Maria and Ignazio Petraroia

Cara Zia Rosa - There are many stories that I can share and words to describe your beautiful spirit, but “genuine heart” is what comes to mind when describing who you are, and what you imbued in this life. Growing up, I always looked forward to our “special family trips” to Canada. I couldn’t wait to see my cool Canadian cousins, and Zia Rosa and Zio Alessandro. When we finally jumped out of our car, after a long 9 hour drive, you scooped up Nicolina and myself into your arms and gave us a billion kisses and the strongest hug ever. The hospitality that would unfold in those visits always made me feel loved and welcomed. I looked forward to your wonderful meals, but most especially to the wonderful stories that you and Zio shared as we sat around the table; stories rich with family history, stories of San Giuliano del Sannio, stories of your arrival in Canada. Whether we were at your home in St. Clair or thereafter your home in North York, it always felt like an adventure to me. You made sure that we had all our favorite breakfast foods, a special gift, and always words of encouragement. You always reminded us “sei bella, sei intelligente, sei brava”, and there was nothing that would convince you otherwise. Even in those many moments apart, when I called to say hello, you were so excited to chat, calling out my name, Maria Teresa, with such joy; and every phone call ended with an “I love you” that you spoke in English. I will also cherish our trip to Chianciano, Italy with you and Zio in August of ‘87. We had so much fun exploring that lovely city, and creating that special memory. I will hold dear all these moments, and will miss your kind smile, warm eyes, and loving ways. You loved with your whole heart, never sought to partition or bargain your love. You gave it freely, openly, without agenda. You saw the good in everyone and chose to always rise above the pettiness of life by simply loving those who were part of yours; and in that journey you touched more lives than you will ever realize. Your “genuine heart” is what I will remember today as I say good-bye to you, and what I will remember for always when I celebrate your memory. Thank you for enriching my life and always making me feel special. Rest in peace my dear Zia Rosa. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

Un bacione grande
da tua nipota,
Maria Teresa
