My mom, a Superwoman. She raised three children on her own from the age of 40. She was not only a mother to us but to all her siblings that arrived to Canada for the first time. Over time, my Zias and Zios have shared stories of her; noting, she was the head of the house and made sure everyone was taken care of. My mom continued this throughout her life; she would remind us from time to time, questa è casa mia e qui commando io.

My mom would always explain the reasons why she loved each of her children. Maria was the first born, è la prima. Raffaelle was her heart, nel mio cuore. And when it came me, I was her baby, sei la piu piccola. She would tease me by saying that she found me in the laneway but she looked at me with those beautiful green eyes, would wink, and blow me a kiss without anyone seeing.

My mom had another daughter, my sister-in-law, Mary, they had a very special relationship, she would refer to her as Maria Lacaria, making sure that she knew that she was talking to her. Mary would always say how lucky she is to have her in her life and a mother-in-law like my mom. She became her “Mama”.

When her grandchildren, Anthony and Sara, were born they were the loves of her life. Every night before bed, my mom would call them to say, "Buona Notte, I love you, have a good day at school tomorrow, call me when you get home”. If Anthony or Sara forgot to call; my mom would pick up the phone and call them at exactly 3:45. As soon as they were in her presence, her face would light up and she would call out, Antonio Mio e Saralina, Bella di la Nonna.

Anyone that knew my mom knew she was a tough cookie but had a heart of gold. My mom loved to bake her Easter cookies, celebrate birthdays with her own version of Happy Birthday, play Bingo at Christmas, celebrate the saint of her hometown, Maria Della Consolazione, and sing at Church, she was always the loudest.

Unfortunately, when she was diagnosed with dementia in 2014, we were told that she would only have two years to live. But the superwoman that she was proved the doctors wrong. The doctors have always said it’s because of the care that we were providing for her.

Maria, my sister, Ralph and I are forever grateful for the time you dedicated and the care you provided to mother. You were an integral part of mother proving those doctors wrong. We know it was not easy but we cannot thank you enough.

Mother, Mama, and Nonna, we all love you and will miss you so much.
Rest in peace.
